Although he offered to reduce his salary by half to secure a five-year contract with a club that owed 1.2 billion euros ($1.5 million) and a player, the agreement was thwarted by strict Spanish League salary restrictions.

Many in France’s Ligue 1 are mixed about Messi’s imminent arrival. He will be a star attacking force alongside Kylian Mabappe, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe. Neymar is a former Barcelona teammate.

Frederic Antonetti, Metz’s coach, said that it was “extraordinary for Ligue 1”.

“But, for a purist such as me, Messi should’ve finished his career at Barcelona.”

PSG has already signed Sergio Ramos, a veteran Spanish defender from Real Madrid, to their team. He also joined the Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donarumma.

Messi is a free agent. Ramos also arrived on a free transfer.

Angel di Maria, his Argentina international colleague, would be pleased to see him again at the Parc des Princes.

Another attraction is that coach Mauricio pochettino, just like Messi started his career at Newell’s Old Boys Rosario, Argentina.

Pochettino was not able to conceal the arrival of Messi.

“There have been many rumors. Many things were being said as PSG struggled to win a 2-1 victory over Troyes in the opening game of their new league season.

Jorge Sampaoli (the coach of bitter rivals Marseille in PSG) said Messi’s arrival could only be good for French football.

Sampaoli stated, “It would have been great for Ligue 1; he’s one of the best players in the world.”

“French football is a winning and growing sport.

“Even if it’s not Marseille, it will be great. The championship would keep everyone on their toes. We will have an extra incentive to play against him.”

In a sign that Barcelona wants to be quick, they beat Juventus 3-0 in a preseason friendly.
