Hospitals warn of cyberattacks that can raise deaths and slow down patient treatment techydeed.com

A new report asked healthcare providers about their experiences.

Nearly a quarter of the healthcare facilities affected by an attack involving ransomware during the past two years reported an increase in the death rate of patients due to a new study released by cybersecurity company Censinet. The findings add to the growing data collection from data showing that cyberattacks cause logistical or financial issues; they could be a significant health risk.

“There’s enough impact from ransomware on patient care that it’s undeniable,” says Ed Gaudet, CEO and director of Cabinet. “We should not be afraid to look at this data, and to keep pushing on this question.”

The study, carried out by a research institute known as The Ponemon Institute, collected survey responses from more than 600 healthcare institutions throughout the United States, ranging from regional health centers to medical device makers. More than 40 percent of respondents reported they’d experienced ransomware attacks in the past two years, cyberattacks that block computer systems, and demand payments to unlock the system. These attacks interfered with hospitals’ ability to provide take care of patients. About 70 percent of organizations that were hit by ransomware said that interruptions of HTML0led to prolonged hospitalizations for patients and delayed testing or procedure. Additionally, 36 percent of respondents said they had more problems due to medical procedures, while 22 percent reported higher death rates.

These numbers have significant caveats. They’re only a small portion of healthcare institutions. There’s no way to double-check the data the organizations submitted. The survey did not ask the organizations to explain what led them to these conclusions. They also didn’t specify the methods they used to measure the rate of death, such as. Without further details on those methods, it’s crucial to look at the data with caution, Gaudet says. It’s likely too early to conclude that ransomware was the sole cause of bad outcomes in these frequency ranges. “We have to be careful as an industry not to overreact,” He declares. It’s still something that the industry must pay attention to and be concerned about. “Even if it’s just one percent or half a percent, we should care about this data.”

In total, more than half of healthcare organizations that responded to the survey indicated they didn’t feel confident that their organization was prepared to handle the threat of ransomware.

Healthcare professionals have been cautious about claiming that ransomware causes harm to patients. There aren’t many attempts to quantify the link between cyberattacks and health. Hospitals are known to not divulge many details about their experiences due to the risk of negative consequences for their image. “I think as an industry, this is a question we almost don’t want to know the answer to,” Gaudet states. “Because if it’s true, then man, we really have our work cut out for us.”

Cyberattacks against hospitals have increased over the last year, which adds new urgency to the issue. Recently, there have been calls to look more closely at the problem: a recent study conducted by The United States’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) For instance, it revealed that hospitals in Vermont that were hit by ransomware in the COVID-19 epidemic began to experience more deaths rapidly than those not faced with cyberattacks.

“I think this is reaching a level of criticality that is getting the attention of CEOs and board rooms,” Gaudet states. “Data such as this is likely to be factored into the way people consider the areas of investment and focus. If ransomware truly is becoming a risk to patient safety it will be necessary to tackle the issue.”
